WELCOME

Continental Crossings was formed by a small team of students studying civil engineering at The University of Iowa. These students had the desire to combine their extramural interests with their curriculum, through an augmented senior-design project. Although their aim was to surpass academic requirements, the team's main goal was to provide assistance to those in the developing world by designing and building a standardized foot-bridge for a rural community in Peru . In November of 2006 the team traveled to meet the community, for whom the bridge would be constructed, and to conduct a preliminary site survey.

There is no such think as a simple act of compassion or an invonsequential act of service. Everything we do for another person has infinite consequences.

The team was responsible for creating drawings and an erection manual for bridge replication, guided by the non-profit organization Bridges to Prosperity (B2P). B2P offered coordination assistance in the team’s efforts. The five team-members were also responsible for on-site surveying, material selection, and the resulting design which was constructed by a local mason and volunteer community labor. With a time-commitment of over 500 hours, the project required work in both the fall and spring semesters, exceeding the typical requirement for students enrolled in the spring-semester course. Although the usual curriculum prepares students for their future, the team's willingness to lengthen the project in order to make a difference served to fulfill academic requirements while simultaneously aiding those in the developing world.

Continental Crossings would like to take this opportunity to respectfully represent The University of Iowa, the College of Engineering, and the respective communities from which they have come.

Sincerely,

The Continental Crossings Team
